Popular Youth Pastor Matt Pitt of The Basement Jumps Off 45-Foot Cliff Running From Cops

http://www.christianpost.com/news/popular-youth-pastor-matt-pitt-of-the-basement-jumps-off-45-foot-cliff-running-from-cops-102909/

Matt Pitt, 30, founder of one of America's largest Christian youth ministries, The Basement, was arrested by Alabama police for impersonating a police officer for the second time on Tuesday night after he jumped off a 45-foot cliff in a last ditch attempt to escape.

"He is lucky that cliff didn't take his life," Jefferson County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Randy Christian told AL.com. "For his family's sake and for his I am truly glad he is OK. As I said before, going to jail may very well have saved his life."

Pitt, who has been battling longstanding rumors of drug use, was wanted for impersonating a peace officer but refused to surrender to authorities. He was arrested shortly after he gave an interview to a local television station.
Christian praised Birmingham police for helping to catch the wanted pastor and noted that they weren't happy with the youth leader's behavior.

"Obviously they were just as offended by this suspect pretending to be a police officer as everyone else was,'' Christian said in another AL.com interview.

When officers asked Pitt where he worked at the time of his arrest, he told them that he worked for the sheriff. "His story just continues to get stranger by the moment,'' said Christian. "You can draw your own conclusions as to why."

The evangelist was released from the Jefferson County Jail just before 1 a.m. on Tuesday and he was later picked up by Shelby County sheriff's deputies where he is being held without bond.

On Thursday, investigators told Fox 6 that they were awaiting the results of a drug test ordered for Pitt on Wednesday morning.

"The public has to be able to trust, when they're talking to someone that presents themself as a law enforcement officer, if that's what they are. We depend on that for law enforcement to operate effectively," Christian noted in that report.

Authorities noted on Thursday that there was a high possibility that Pitt will serve some jail time for this current case because he violated the probation of a 2012 case where he was charged with a similar offense.

The Basement was started by Pitt in the basement of his parents' house in 2004 and is a monthly Christian youth-revival service that features popular music and energetic speakers.

As word of his arrest spread, reactions have been mixed, but some ex-board members and clergy said Pitt wanted to be a "Lone Ranger."
"We saw him going down the wrong way," an unidentified board member of The Basement said in an AL.com report. "He pushed everybody away."

Another unidentified ex-board member said Pitt and his closest advisers: "took their eyes off Jesus. I believe there were great possibilities. I believe people were helped. I never looked at Matt as a rock star. I saw an opportunity to win the lost. In the beginning Jesus was foremost. ... God is not going to be mocked."

Some area clergy also expressed frustration at the young evangelist.

"I think we have to be careful not to let him off the hook as a victim," Lyle Dorsett, the Billy Graham professor of evangelism at Samford University's Beeson Divinity School told AL.com. "He needs to face up to the fact that he's basically dishonest. He needs to get out of the ministry and get himself sorted out. He's got an inability to live in the real world."

Birmingham evangelist Scott Dawson, however, was more gracious in hisreaction.

"This was one of the premier outreaches to young people in the country," said Dawson. "Not only in Birmingham, but across the country. He was the new thing on the market."

"We certainly need to pray for Matt and his family," he added. "It doesn't change the impact on people's lives. They didn't respond to Matt, they responded to Christ. Christ is the one that can changes lives."

Gay Lawmaker to Christians: We’ll Take Your Children

7:00AM EDT 8/26/2013, Matt Barber

Few people doubt that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie hopes to become president in 2016. Unfortunately for him, he may have just signed away any chance of that.

Last week, Christie signed A3371, a draconian piece of legislation that bars licensed therapists from helping children overcome unwanted same-sex attractions, behavior or identity. This law bans help for minors even when—as is so often the case—those same-sex attractions arise from childhood sexual abuse by the likes of a Jerry Sandusky.

This law will prohibit minors and their parents from receiving counseling they desire and will force counselors to violate ethical codes because they will not be able to help clients reach their own counseling goals. This law would enslave children—whether abused or not—to a subjectively determined sexual identity they reject.

The connection between homosexual abuse and “gay identity” is undeniable. Consider this: Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that homosexual men are “at least three times more likely to report CSA (childhood sexual abuse)” than heterosexual men.

Moreover, the Archives of Sexual Behavior—no bastion of conservatism—determined in a 2001 study that nearly half of all gay-identified men were molested by a homosexual pedophile. The study notes, “46 percent of homosexual men and 22 percent of homosexual women reported having been molested by a person of the same gender. This contrasts to only 7 percent of heterosexual men and 1 percent of heterosexual women reporting having been molested by a person of the same gender.”

For obvious reasons, this politically motivated law has been dubbed the “Jerry Sandusky Victimization Act.” Liberty Counsel, one of the fastest-growing civil rights law firms in the country, has stepped in to protect New Jersey children, parents and licensed therapists. We’ve filed a suit to block the law, as we’ve already blocked a similar law in California.

In his signing statement, Gov. Christie wrote, “Government should tread carefully into this area and I do so here reluctantly. I have scrutinized this piece of legislation with that concern in mind. However, I also believe that on issues of medical treatment for children we must look to experts in the field to determine the relative risks and rewards.”

Beyond the fact that Christie and the New Jersey legislature have just violated the First Amendmentrights of New Jersey parents, children and counselors, there remains another problem with his assertion: It’s not true. As with any form of therapy, the “experts” are all over the board on the issue of change therapy.

For instance, both New Jersey Democrats and Christie cited the American Psychological Association (APA) as justification for this gross infringement on the right of self-determination. Although, no doubt, the highly liberal APA supports this and similar "Sandusky laws" for political reasons, the group’s own task force on change therapy—led entirely by members who themselves are “gay”-identified or known political activists—has had to admit, nonetheless, that homosexuality itself “refers to feelings and self-concept.”

The task force confessed that such therapy has shown “varying degrees of satisfaction and varying perceptions of success.” It acknowledged within its own skewed, very limited “study” that some people had “altered their sexual orientation. ... Participants had multiple endpoints, including LGB identity, ex-gay identity, no sexual orientation identity, and a unique self-identity. ... Individuals report a range of effects from their efforts to change their sexual orientation, including both benefits and harm.”

Reports of “both benefits and harm”? Exactly what might be expected from any form of therapy.

But that’s for adults. Here’s the kicker: The APA also acknowledged that there is no evidence whatsoever that change therapy harms minors. Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, addresses this, the most outrageous aspect of the law.

“The very report that the governor cited for signing this law also admitted that there is absolutely zero research—none—regarding the effect of change therapy with minors,” Staver says.

Get that? Gov. Christie just signed into law a bill purporting to prevent harm to minors from change therapy, citing as the reason an APA report that admits there is neither research nor empirical evidence to suggest that change therapy harms minors.

Is your head swimming? It should be.

The governor is one of three things. He is either ill-informed, politically motivated or stupid.

I don’t know. I guess he could be all of the above.

Meanwhile, many experts are outraged by this gross overreach by Christie and other New Jersey liberals. Dr. Nicholas Cummings, former president of the APA, wrote in USA Today, “Contending that all same-sex attraction is immutable is a distortion of reality. Attempting to characterize all sexual reorientation therapy as ‘unethical’ violates patient choice and gives an outside party a veto over patients’ goals for their own treatment. A political agenda shouldn’t prevent gays and lesbians who desire to change from making their own decisions.”

Cummings has testified to personally helping hundreds of formerly homosexual clients achieve the change they desired.

Things get more sinister yet. Last Wednesday, New Jersey Assemblyman Tim Eustace, who sponsored the bill and is openly homosexual, bombastically compared change therapy to “beating a child” and suggested the government take children seeking change away from their parents. He told Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, “What this does is prevent things that are harmful to people. If a parent were beating their child on a regular basis, we would step in and remove that child from the house. If you pay somebody to beat your child or abuse your child, what’s the difference?”

Mat Staver responded on the same program, “It is shocking to hear the law’s sponsor threaten parents that the state will remove their children from them if they provide the counsel they need and which helps them. This is the ultimate nanny state.”

I’ll take it a step further, and I think I speak for many Christian fathers: None of my three children suffer from unwanted same-sex attraction, but if any of them did and they decided to seek change therapy to reconcile their feelings with their faith, Mr. Eustace and the rest of his "Gaystapo" would be extremely ill-advised to crest my front porch with designs on taking my children.

Is this George Washington’s America or Joseph Stalin’s Russia?

Peppard: Free beer for Oprah and Osteen? Kidd Kraddick would want it that way

Last week, in a move that the late radio king Kidd Kraddick would have loved, Kidd Kraddick in the Morning co-host Big Al Mackput up a sign outside his Uptown bar hoping to capitalize on Bishop T.D. Jakes’ upcoming spiritual gathering at American Airlines Center, MegaFest.

Among those appearing with Jakes this week in Dallas are Oprah Winfrey and televangelist Joel Osteen.

It’s been a month since Kraddick’s startling death in New Orleans. His morning radio team is carrying on heroically, putting out a top-notch show and getting back into the gag business.

Outside Big Al’s McKinney Avenue Tavern there is a sign that reads “Oprah Winfrey & Joel Osteen Come Eat Free and Sing Karaoke at McKinney Avenue Tavern.” And then, there’s the fine print at the bottom, “Wings and domestic draft only please. (Joel, we have non-alcoholic beer.)”

Oh yeah, Al put up the sign on what would have been Kraddick’s 54thbirthday.

“Kidd would have wanted it that way,” joked fellow Kidd Kraddick in the Morning co-host J-Si Chavez.

“Yes,” agreed Kellie Rasberry, ‘because Kidd was all about promoting Al’s bar.”

Museveni renews marriage vows

Museveni, First Lady celebrate 40 years of marriage

Publish Date: Aug 25, 2013

President Yoweri Museveni and his wife Janet Museveni have renewed their marriage vows, toasting to love and friendship at a colourful ceremony that saw the jovial couple also witness the baptism of their grandchildren.

The groom clad in a black suit and white shirt and the bride a crème trendy gown thanked God for the forty years in marriage saying this is a journey they started as two people but they are now a family of 23. The coupled renewed their commitment to love each other and asked for forgiveness where they wronged each other. There was laughter when the Bishop asked the groom to kiss his bride, and the president said kissing was un African.

The memorable event took place on Saturday at Nshwere Church of Uganda in Kiruhuura District and was attended by close family members, religious leaders, ministers, members of parliament, business fraternity and well wishers.

The occasion was preceded by a baptism ceremony of Ruhamya Kabuguma Kainerugaba, Kenshuro Nankunda Kainerugaba, Ihendu kainembabazi kainerugaba, children of Brigadier  and Mrs Muhoozi Kainerugaba; Samuel Tandeka Karugire son of Edwin and Natasha Karugire; Mumutiine Rubanza Bicubirenga Rwabogo, Kendagaano Mwanganye Kebihembe Rwabogo, Judah Nyentsya Rutasingwa Eyokyeero Rwabogo children of Mr Odrek and Patience Rwabogo and Muhanganzima Kirunga Kamuntu, Nduhuura Rushongoka Kamuntu, Kakyama Museveni Rugasira Kamuntu children to Mr Geofrey and Diana Kamuntu.

The President and the bride commended the Church for the reforms they continue to embrace and urged it to preach against killing each other.

"Am glad you accepted to baptize my grandchildren with their indigenous names. I however want the Church to intervene and stop the continued bloodshed in the area over land conflicts because these are killings by Christians against fellow Christians which is un Godly,” he said. He also discouraged the shaking of hands as precaution to avoiding against Hemorrhagic fever.

They later hosted their guests to a grand luncheon at the family home in Rwakitura which was attended by senior government officials including the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, the Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki and the Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi among others.

Museveni hailed his wife Janet for being transparent and religious saying she prays regularly and constantly. He thanked God for blessing them with children and grandchildren who have been raised by his wife to be responsible and disciplined. He told their guests that he was an absentee husband and father since he was involved in the liberation struggle. He thanked God for keeping his family.

“The way God brought us together and enabled us to complement each other was indeed a miracle,” he said.

The President who gave an in-depth background to the liberation struggle revealed that he trained 28 fighters in Montez, Mozambique, but of those only four were alive today, including Generals Salim Saleh and Ivan Koreta who also attended the ceremony.

He said Obote and other young people squandered the chance to organise their country because they did not know God. He stressed that there was no need for another war.

He said that there are crucial issues in the society today including the fear of God, maintaining peace and creating wealth for the families.

The First Lady, Mrs. Janet Museveni thanked God for joining them and leading them through the 40 years of marriage, saying He never abandoned them through both the good and difficult times. She expressed confidence that they would move together in life, describing her husband as a kind person who loves his family and who has put his life on the line for the sake of his country.

The couple’s son Brig. Muhoozi Kainerigaba said that God gave his father courage (obumanzi) to fight for Uganda and liberate it. He said that God gave patience to his mother during the difficult moments.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali congratulated the couple for sustaining their marriage saying it is an excellent example to the rest of Ugandans especially at this time when the institution of marriage is under satanic attack and increased divorce rates.

"Sustaining marriage and being in love for all these years is not easy. Marriage is not a bed of roses, but is built on trust and forgiveness. The first family has set a wonderful example. All the other politicians and leaders should set out priorities and never forget their families" he said.

He said the couple’s actions will ignite a new wave of respect for marriage among Ugandans and sends a clear message to the rest of the world that Uganda is a Godly nation and a source of pride.

Rt. Rev. Ntagali cited poverty, hatred and homosexuality as the immediate challenges to the institution of marriage and urged legislators, police, leaders and politicians to join the church in the fight against the vice to protect families.

"We don't know who is behind this agenda and what they are up to. We maintain our position that marriage is between man and woman. We want to see our children marrying and getting grandchildren, therefore we must join forces to fight this evil" he said.

Following Accusations Of Political Murders By His Ex- Top Aide, Pressure Mounts On Uganda's Gen. Museveni

Vincent MagombeAugust 29,2013

Gen. Museveni eulogized Gen. Kazini at his funeral service. Now another top general says Museveni actually ordered the killing

[Uganda: Analysis]

Twenty-seven years into his regime, General Yoweri Museveni, the U.S.-backed Ugandan dictator, is coming under intense pressure from the families of murdered top military and political leaders, who want to know the truth about how their beloved ones perished.

The deaths of Major General Kazini in 2009, Brigadier Noble Mayombo in 2007, and Dr. Andrew Kayiira in 1987 shocked the nation, and up to today many questions remain unanswered as to how they met their end. Now accusations by Gen. David Sejusa, one of Gen. Museveni's closest aides until recently that the Ugandan ruler had a hand in these killings is shaking political circles.

According to Ugandan sources close to the families, the relatives of the dead men are demanding for the post-mortem reports to be made public. And they also want international independent inquiries into the deaths of their loved ones. These demands, according to sources close to the families, are being made not only by the families of the late Kayiira and late Gen. Kazini, but also that of the late Brigadier Mayombo.

The main problem, according to the sources, is that General Museveni continues to block the release of any independent reports into the deaths, and in the case of Kayiira, refuses to disclose the results of a British inquiry that was done at the request of the Kampala regime.

The dead Ugandans were viewed as 'enemies' by Museveni

In all the cases mentioned, the common denominator was that the deceased persons had all fallen out with the president before they died. Major General Kazini and Dr. Andrew Kayiira, in particular, had been arrested and charged with treason. The two were also suspected to be plotting to escape to foreign countries when they were killed.

Dr. Kayiira, who died in the immediate aftermath of 1980-1986 civil war that brought Yoweri Museveni to power, was viewed by Museveni as a political rival, who, according to a family source, had to be liquidated. Just before his death, Kayiira was arrested by Museveni and charged with treason. He was out on bail and was thought to be planning to escape from the country when he was brutally shot to death by assailants who raided a home of a close friend and journalist where he was staying.

Leader of the opposition Democratic Party (DP), Norbert Mao, on his part has stated that the party is now publicly backing the Kayiira family in their search for the truth. He has tasked General Museveni to make public the British findings on the Kayiira death.

A senior politician from the DP, who was a close associate of Dr. Kayiira, said that as far as the family is concerned, the fact that Museveni does not want to cooperate in the efforts to get the British report released into the public domain points to his guilt. “Why is he hiding the facts? If he were innocent, he would have nothing to fear,” said the politician.

And, so it seems, Kayiira’s family believe that their relative was murdered on orders of President Museveni. Gen. Sejusa, who was former coordinator of Intelligence Services in Uganda says in a bombshell letter that Museveni knows who the killers are and the motives.

The other controversial killing was that of former army commander General Kazini who was also at odds with Museveni when he was murdered in the most gruesome manner. His battered and bloodied body was found lying in a door way at a girlfriend’s mansion in the Kampala suburb of Namuwongo. The death was pinned on the girlfriend, who remains incarcerated in prison, in spite of her protestation of innocence. Kazini's skull was reportedly bashed with what may have been a metal pipe.

Kazini, who served as Museveni’s army commander and had been a leadng figure in the Ugandan military intervention in the DR-Congo war, which followed the 1994 Rwandan genocide, was arrested and court-courtmartialed on a number of charges including for treason.

The Kazini family point to sharp disagreements with General Museveni as the main cause of his death.

Upon his death, some family members called for an investigation. According to a family source, Museveni was very angry with their demands, and it was not long before another family member, Singa Muhwezi, the young brother to the late General Kazini was himself killed. Singa was, reportedly, the loudest of all in the family in demanding for an independent investigation into the demise of the fallen general.

For the Kazini family, the deaths of General Kazini and Singa Muhwezi are not the only deaths, whose facts they are seeking to establish.

The family are also interested in getting answers from General Museveni about an earlier death of another Kazini brother, Jet Mwebaze.

Lt. Colonel Jet Mwebaze was a senior army officer who died in Western Uganda in 1998 under unclear circumstances. Officially, the cause of Jet’s death was said to be a plane crash. But some in the Kazini family believe that the army officer survived the plane crash only to be shot by Ugandan army rescuers, on orders from "above". The Kazini family were shocked to learn that some agents working for General Salim Saleh’s were also on the fateful plane when it went down. Salim Saleh is Museveni’s brother, who wields the most power in the country only after Museveni.

In recent times, according to sources close to the Kazini family, state agents have approached the family seeking to bribe them so that they stop asking questions about the deaths. Other family members are believed to have been threatened with death if they continued to demand for an independent probe.

Late Brigadier Mayombo’s family also seeking answers
Noble Mayombo, a former Director of Military Intelligence, who was also an army representative in the Ugandan Parliament, had risen rapidly through the ranks to become army Brigadier and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defense – a position he held at the time of his death.

When Brigadier Mayombo suddenly fell ill, records from the private hospital in which he was first admitted indicated that he was suffering from “acute-pancreatitis” – a condition “where the pancreas becomes inflamed over a short period of time."

According to a family source, there is widespread belief that the condition was caused by some form of poison.

The public outcry that followed his death forced the Museveni regime to institute a public investigation, but until today the report that was handed to General Museveni in 2007 has not been put in the public domain.

According to a source in the Ugandan military who knew the late Brigadier Mayombo quite well, just before his death, Mayombo was being investigated by General Museveni, who believed that the youthful 42-year old officer was getting more and more sympathetic to anti-regime opposition leaders. According to this officer, General Museveni was particularly angry that Brigadier Mayombo was persistently pleading with the President to stop on-going arrests and persecutions of political opponents.

In the wake of recent revelations by Sejusa, a four-star general, it seems like a flood-gate has been unlocked. More Ugandans are now demanding answers to the killings of these prominent individuals. The appetite for information is insatiable and The Black Star News reports that the website has already crashed six times since the Gen. Sejusa letter detailing his accusations was posted, due to the excess traffic.

Accusing Uganda President Of Murdering His Own Former Comrades, A Top General Warns Him To 'Go Slow'

David Sejusa

August 25,2013

[Op-Ed: Global]
Gen. David Sejusa, a former top aide to Uganda's U.S.-backed president Gen. Yoweri Museveni, whom he's had a falling outwith, sent the following letter to his Ugandan lawyer Joseph Luzige with serious allegations against his former boss, Gen. Museveni.

Sejusa says he has photographs of Museveni's former comrades in arms who he later had murdered and warns him to 'go slow.' In the letter he also accuses Gen. Museveni of ordering the killing of other prominent Ugandans such as Andrew Kayiira, a minister and former rival. Gen. Sejusa was responding to an article in Uganda's The Daily Monitor that he says was a smear campaign orchestrated by Gen. Museveni against him and his family.

The Black Star News obtained the following copy from Gen. Sejusa's associates in London where the general took refuge after denouncing the Museveni regime earlier this year. Gen. Sejusa in part writes:'This time we shall not allow you to murder our people. It started in the Bush, remember our army commander Sam Magara and those boys you used to kill him in cold blood? We kept their photos. They will be released for your enjoyment.'

Below is the letter with some words converted to American English spelling:

Dear counsel Luzige, I have read the monitor story of today 25. 8. 2013.

It's nauseating to say the [least]. As you can see this is a government run amok, mis- information stunt.

But it's dangerous too as it shows a CRIMINAL INTENT. First of all, I don't know of any close relative who runs a forex bureau. Who indeed would have access [US $8 million]? That type of money is of course peanuts to the Museveni family.

That's why in their eyes, it's a credible spin. But like all lies, this is not hard to expose.

In any case, this should not be difficult to establish, its source, transit route through bank of Uganda, etc. So go right ahead and publish the name of the forex and the owner and all those other factors about the alleged transaction.

Secondly, let's know the name of other relative who left the country with that stash of money and back, that who could carry such huge amounts of money undetected. That US Dollars 8 million. How foolish must this spinner be! It is laughable.

To try and sound smart, the spinners mix in foreign intelligence. You don't have to be bright to know the foreign power they mean. Remember they had alleged that before I got away, I met and plotted with the British High Commissioner about my escape.

This was leaked in the press by their local tabloid. This, as we all know was a total lie. So this is basically intended to serve three purposes:

1). To lay ground to harass, disorganize and harm my family and their livelihood. This will not be the first time as I will explain later. However, as the story develops the people of Uganda will get to know the game plan of Museveni and his gang. They will learn that this is a trick long played by Museveni to get to his political opponents, their families and businesses.

Actually Museveni did the same with Maj. Gen James Kazini when he accused him that he was sending money to elements in Southern Sudan (SPLA) and West Nile veterans to topple him. That's when Museveni ordered his execution by procuring the services of a 6-foot 6-inches man to murder Gen Kazini. Forget that trash of [Lydia] Draru.

In case of Kazini, again some forex bureau, originally said to belong to Gen Kazini, but actually that belonged to a known relative of Museveni was later to be used to pass the money for the payment of the executioners of Kazini, to the accounts of the assassins.

The family of Gen Kazini knows this, and when his young brother SINGA [Muhwezi] tried to follow this, he too was killed. And the KENYAN team of private investigators which had been hired by the family was attacked and it left the country at night. And the family was threatened and their businesses targeted, etc.

Two very close senior relatives of Museveni supervised this. But I will not mention their names for now, though their names are known by those with this information. But for now lets keep it at that. Now it's the same game being played by Museveni and those close to him, we are watching.

This time we shall not allow you to murder our people. It started in the Bush, remember our army commander Sam Magara and those boys you used to kill him in cold blood? We kept their photos. They will be released for your enjoyment.

This mischief must stop Mr. President.

You know we know you. You are dealing with a different cup of tea. Please go slow in trying to enjoy it. It will burn you. So go slow on your dirty tricks campaign.

For those not in the know again Andrew Kayiira was said to possess money before he was gunned down by Museveni goons.

The list of the killers is known because the case was investigated by the best police in the world.

So there is no debate about that. The reason given was money. Mr.  Museveni knows the real motive and the real executioners. If Mr. Museveni does not go well and use this time to ask for amnesty from the people uganda, then your crimes will overwhelm you.

Let Scotland Yard release the Report of Kayiira's murder and many many others. The world will be shocked about the murderers in our midst.

For now your game plan is clear. It's stupid because its reckless. But watch out. I can assure you your every move is being watched. Those who died will live to haunt you. I don't steal like you.

The British government knows my situation. Britain [is] not a corrupt Banana Republic like ours which you have destroyed through your corruption. They would not allow US 8 million to be smuggled at the airport. It's a foolish lie.

2). The second reason for this story is to try and make me look as dirty as that Club of Looters. Unfortunately for you, it can't hold now. It's too late. I know you are trying to destroy the little I earned at home.

Just like you did in 1996, 1997 and 1999. If you do, God will reward me 10-fold or more. He always did and will!

But everything has its time. So you can go ahead and please yourself Mr. President.

3). Third reason is to threaten people from helping me, by trying to link them to a rebellion.  This rebellion is music to my ears. It's not bad at all as it sounds when it's being alleged. Not bad story at all. We need to be told its extent, organization, personnel, arms, support. Target, etc etc!

It's gonna be interesting. So go right ahead and charge me, not for desertion, for that's not the real reason you assaulted the Entebbe International Airport, but for that alleged treason, bring it in the open.

It's high time. Just be informed [I am] not afraid.

Lastly a word of caution to those being used for this propaganda, you may be paid. But when the country sinks, you too will be chief guest at the sinking party.

So we need to be mindful of what all this portends to our country.

Millionaire gay couple the Drewitt-Barlows have confirmed they have launched a legal challenge to the right of churches to opt out of gay weddings.

In fresh comments published by the Chelmsford Weekly News in the U.K. today, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow said legal action had started.

“We’ve launched a challenge to the government’s decision to allow some religious groups to opt out of marrying same-sex couples," he said.

“We feel we have the right as parishioners in our village to utilize the church we attend to get married.

“It is no reflection on our local church, who have been nothing but supportive towards us. We understand their hands are tied by a higher group of people within the church.”

Earlier this month, Drewitt-Barlow said he and his civil partner, Tony, would go to court to force gay weddings on churches.

He said at the time, “The only way forward for us now is to make a challenge in the courts against the church.

“It is a shame that we are forced to take Christians into a court to get them to recognize us.”

He added, “It upsets me because I want it so much—a big lavish ceremony, the whole works. I just don’t think it is going to happen straight away.

“As much as people are saying this is a good thing, I am still not getting what I want.”

A government bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the U.K. cleared Parliament earlier this year, and the first same-sex weddings are expected in 2014.

The legislation allows churches to opt out of performing gay weddings, and it specifically protects the Church of England.

However, top human rights lawyer Aidan O’Neill says protection for the Anglican Church is “eminently challengeable” in court.

A copy of O’Neill’s legal advice was sent to the prime minister in January, but Mr. Cameron nevertheless proceeded with the legislation.

Judge: Ugandan Homosexual Activist Group Can Sue American Pastor for ‘Crimes Against Humanity’

SPRINGFIELD A federal judge has refused to dismiss an international lawsuit filed by a Ugandan homosexual activist group, which accuses an American pastor of committing ‘crimes against humanity’ for speaking out against homosexual behavior in the country.

As previously reported, Massachusetts Pastor Scott Lively, author of The Pink Swastika, had visited the nation of Uganda in 2009, where he spoke on what the Bible says about homosexuality and expressed support of pastors in the country that were working to oppose the proliferation of sexual activity between those of the same gender.

Following his visit, the group Sexual Minorities of Uganda (SMUG), filed a lawsuit against Lively, asserting that he had violated international law because his words allegedly encouraged government persecution against homosexuals in the nation. He was sued under the Alien Tort Statute (ATS), which allows individuals from foreign nations to file federal complaints against U.S. citizens who have committed torts overseas.

“That’s about as ridiculous as it gets,” Lively told the New York Times. “I’ve never done anything in Uganda except preach the Gospel and speak my opinion about the homosexual issue.”

“ATS is not a blanket delegation of lawmaking to the democratically unaccountable international community,” said Mat Staver, founder of Liberty Council, which is representing the evangelical pastor. “Like all American citizens, Lively enjoys a fundamental First Amendment right to engage in nonviolent political discourse anywhere in the world.”

In January of this year, Senior Litigation Counsel Harry Mihet and General Counsel Steve Crampton asked District Judge Michael A. Ponsor to throw out the case. SMUG is being represented by a group funded by George Soros.

However, now eight months later, Ponsor has issued his decision, refusing to dismiss the lawsuit.

“He has allegedly supported and actively participated in worldwide initiatives, with a substantial focus on Uganda, aimed at repressing free expression by LGBTI groups, destroying the organizations that support them, intimidating LGBTI individuals, and even criminalizing the very status of being lesbian or gay,” he wrote in his 79-page ruling.

Ponsor, appointed by Bill Clinton in 1994, reportedly said that Ugandan representatives were “co-conspirators” with Lively, and that to some, standing against the proliferation of homosexuality “constitutes a crime against humanity that violates international norms.” However, he advised that it is too soon to say whether Lively actually violated any American law.

Lively’s attorney, Harry Mihet, issued a brief statement in response to Ponsor’s decision, remarking that the case should not have been permitted to proceed.

“We are disappointed with the decision because we believe SMUG’s claims are firmly foreclosed, not only by the First Amendment right to free speech, but also by the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Kiobel, which eliminated Alien Tort Statute claims for events that allegedly occurred in foreign nations,” he said. “We are still reviewing the court’s ruling, and will continue to vigorously defend Mr. Lively’s constitutional rights, with confidence that he will ultimately be vindicated.”

The case will now move forward in federal court.

In addition to serving as an attorney, author and pastor, Lively assists the homeless and drug addicts of his community and helps them to find freedom from their chains through the power of Jesus Christ.

I am an ordained Baptist minister but more importantly I am a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. I was saved in 1975 watching Billy Graham on television after having lived a wicked and Christless life. I graduated with a three year degree from Trinity Bible College in Dunedin, Florida. I have three children, two grandsons, and one granddaughter. I not only see the obvious falling away of the present day church, but I humbly acknowledge that we all are in desperate need of a massive revival. I hope this blog ministers to you, and may Jesus Himself receive all the preeminence! spcrick@msn.com

The Truth About Christian Television

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Before I give an honest critique about Christian television, allow me to sum it up with a broad generalization which I believe to be accurate. Christian television these days is little more than a money raising vehicle, much of which gets pocketed by the star of each program. In 1975 God used Billy Graham to lead me to Christ via television. Now I do not agree with everything Billy Graham does or believes, however back in those days his association bought expensive time on secular stations and preached the gospel. Today, Christian television does not preach the gospel.

I do believe that God desires the church to use any and all technologies in order to reach the lost. But that is not what Christian television is doing in these last days. Preachers and ministers are gaining great wealth and popularity through television and believers and unbelievers alike are funding these spectacles. And even if you can identify certain programs that preach Biblical truth, these programs support the networks that continue to expose people to all kinds of heresy and error. And that makes those “orthodox” programs culpable since they lend their support to these ungodly networks.

Television is very alluring and through slick imagery it bends the minds of those that watch and like the Greek sirens of old it draws people toward spiritual shipwreck. And when you see men like Franklin Graham endorsing people like Paul and Jan Crouch of TBN, then you realize just how sacred these money making cows are. People will endure all kinds of blatant compromise just so they can gain access to the air waves and into people’s hearts and minds and ultimately into people’s wallets.

If you dared to watch an entire day of Christian television you would see an incredible array of dog and pony shows. Anointed oil, blessed spring water, spiritual rocks, and magic handkerchiefs are but a few of the religious talismans offered to the gullible. Screaming and yelling and telling people their names and physical conditions are popular on these networks. And most of the men and women advertise their upcoming meetings which are also great money making schemes.

Many people have their favorite preachers and watch them religiously. And when that preacher comes to town and rents out an auditorium, it is filled. Books and Cds and other trinkets will be on sale, and an offering will be taken. Let us unveil the dirty little secret. These meeting are very lucrative or else they would not be holding them. Money is the petrol that runs the engine. Most of these preachers stay in hotels with lavish accommodations and they do not eat at McDonalds. The entire spectacle is a waste of God’s money and an affront to all that Christ lived and taught. And it isn’t confined to the false teachers. Even “orthodox” teachers and preachers hold such meetings and rake in the big bucks.

But as lucrative as these meetings are they pale in comparison to the money making vehicle of television. And as if the normal offerings were not enough, the Christian networks hold at least one telethon every year. And the managers bring in a gifted money raising false prophet who promises all kinds of divine favor to those who give. In fact, if you listen to the man or women who steers the telethon, it goes way beyond the absurd. If it wasn’t so tragic it would be comical.

But I have heard people say that there are a few good and edifying programs. I ask them if they would reach into a spittoon and search for a penny. I ask them if they would shop in an adult bookstore if it had a Christian book section? I ask them if unholy alliances are God’s will. I ask them if they would partner with Mormon’s to reach people in Africa. You see, the compromise that emanates from these networks is diabolical. It isn’t just a minor disagreement over non-essentials. It is a spreading of damnable lies and soul deceiving heresies. And the program that you identify as edifying supports these heresies. So when you see the ungodly lifestyles of Jan and Paul Crouch, and you gasp with horror, remember that all the programs on TBN contribute to those lifestyles.

So with all the Bibles and books and Cds available to us, we still need to watch cleverly crafted television programs? And when you watch one hour of such a program, do you also pray for one hour? Beloved, I have stated what should be obvious. Christian television isn’t just worthless, it is undermining the gospel itself. If you desire to please God than you should avoid watching and supporting the modern day expression of Christian television.

The pictures of ministers holding black African children or Haitian refugees are shameless. If you could see the homes these preachers live in, or the cars they drive, or even the jets they own, you would get a glimpse into just how much they care about starving children. Christian television has no conscience and will do almost anything to raise a buck. And in reality, that is what it’s all about. Thousands of preachers have gotten rich through this medium, and that includes men and women who do not even believe in the “prosperity message”.

So there it is. Christian television is no longer evangelistic. It has become a sham, a pyramid scheme, and a religious Ponzi scheme as well. If we were shown today’s brand of Christian television 30 years ago we would have been horrified. But since deception usually comes little by little, we have become numb to it and desensitized to the absurdity. In fact, if I were to say that God told me that the first ten people who send me $1000.00 would receive a special miracle in their family and in their finances, I would probably receive several checks.

That clearly outlines the state of western Christianity. The Lord demands a forsaking of everything, but the church continues to accumulate wealth and ask God for more. God has become the servant and we have become the master. God help us all.

The Modern Machiavellian Church

The Modern Machiavellian Church

Niccolò Machiavelli was an Italian philosopher, writer, and humanist. His most famous work, The Prince, is a story of how politicians manipulate situations and control people in order to stay in power. It is this story that has lead to the expression “Machiavellian” which is used to mean cunning and manipulative.

The modern church has adopted Machiavelli’s tactics. It uses all kinds of techniques to lure people to church and even to a false Christ. The modern evangelical church no longer believes in the power of the gospel or the power of the Spirit. Like jingling keys in front of an infant, the church dangles all sorts of shiny gimmicks and enticing words of men’s wisdom in hopes of gaining members and tithers. It is a dazzling display of human craftiness which is supposed to aid the gospel but which in fact presents a false gospel and manipulates unsuspecting sinners. Manipulation and theatrics may work well for the fallen system we call politics, but when are those the vehicles to spread the gospel?

This is not some difference of opinion about methodology. This is in fact a war against Christ and His Word. This kind of deception rips at the very heart of God’s eternal truth. This kind of theatrics and sensationalism obscures Christ, ignores the cross, and replaces God’s word with the cunningly devised fables of men. Entertaining to be sure, but it is a path that leads to death.

I Cor.2:3-5 - And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Col.2:2-4 - That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

The strategies of men have replaced the directives of God’s Word. Entertainment has replaced the convicting power of God’s Spirit. Celebrity preachers have replaced the humble servants. Paul says he came with weakness and fear and much trembling. But today’s preacher drives up in a luxury automobile, dressed in expensive clothes, and spews out hubristic words that speak of earthly success, human power, sexual exploits, and all kinds of worthless advice derived from a carnal mind.

The western evangelical church is broken down and its gates have been burned with strange fire.

Neh.1:1-3 - The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,
2 That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.
3 And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

T
he Babylonians had captured God’s people and Jerusalem was in shambles. When Nehemiah receives this news it moves his soul. He begins to mourn with fasting and prayers for his people. He intercedes for the sins of the people, and he is grieved in his spirit for the state of the Temple in Jerusalem. By God’s providence, and in an answer to Nehemiah’s prayer, he is allowed to go to Jerusalem. He leaves the splendor of the king’s palace and will now step right into persecution.

The church has been completely deceived about persecution. We have confined it to the martyrs or the Chinese church or forbidding prayer in the public schools. But persecution is a thousand times more savage and clandestine than we could have ever imagined. The western church is in the midst of the most diabolical persecution in church history. It has not come with chains and prisons made with men’s hands. This present persecution comes in as an angel of light armed with spiritual chains of deception..

It has placed the church in bondage to the allurements of this world. It has adorned preachers with gold and jewels, and it has placed lying spirits in their mouths. And while the church believes it is receiving the blessings of God, the evil one is stealing our youth, stealing God’s truth, and he has replaced the Spirit with all sorts of fallen customs which are against the teachings of Scripture. But since we prosper materially, the church considers itself blessed. In fact we are dancing inside hell’s prison.

And in the midst of great and wonderful church buildings, our spiritual walls are broken down and our gates are burned with fire. The paradox is striking. We have traded our birthright for a mess of worldly pottage. And while we claim to be feasting at the Lord’s table, we are eating from the world’s trough. And we are blind to our condition and addicted to the dictates of the flesh. And Christian television continues to spread falsehoods and lies while it makes carnal men and women rich. Oh how the Spirit must grieve as He witnesses this monstrous betrayal!

I suggest that this is not time for more evangelistic strategies. This is no time for more Machiavellian cleverness that fills the pews with warm bodies and their vulnerable checkbooks. This is no time to learn Hebrew and Greek and parade the wonders of our orthodox exegesis. This is a time to fast and pray. The ground that has been fallow for so long it can only be broken up by fervent intercession and prayer. It is no easy task, and the flesh will resist any authentic attempt to seek a fresh awakening of the prayer closet.

Here we stand. Here we sit. Here we sleep. God help us for we cannot help ourselves. Even the “orthodox” church has embraced their doctrines and their theologies and their original language credentials. But they treat God as an aloof being who is more information than communication. Think about a son on earth. He learns more and more about his father. He uncovers his father’s genealogy, he measures his height and takes his weight. He and his brothers and sisters gather to learn more and more about their father.

But rarely do they speak with their father. Their communication with him is very formal and in comparison with their study about him it is meager indeed. But the father desires greatly to speak with his children. He sees and hears their studies about him, but they do not seem to relish fellowship with him. He approves of their avid interest in him, but he is grieved since they seem uninterested in long and fruitful sessions with him.

We will always have the cults. The apostasy will continue as well. The Joel Osteens and the Rick warrens will continue to flourish and draw great crowds. And we will need to continue to address such things and protect and teach God’s sheep about the many, many wolves. But unless we ourselves repent of our own stilted Christianity, and unless we allow the Spirit to break up our own fallow ground, we will be a lifeless blaring trumpet. Unless there is a significant revival of prayer among us, our truth will be bound to paper and our lives and power will be bound to this earth.

This is not child’s play. This is no game. God desires to meet with us in the dimension of prayer and without the restrictions of tradition and time. We have fallen in love with music and we have treated prayer with contempt. We desire preachers with oratorical prowess but require nothing of their prayer mantle. We spend more time looking for coupons than we do in prayer. We fellowship more with our dogs than we do with God.

In order to avoid being broken and corrected we avoid the threshing floor of the prayer room. We protect our western life styles by avoiding time with a Holy God. And in so doing we also surrender the immense glory of His very presence. Worship without a foundation of prayer is just singing. Emotional and moving, yes, but fleshly at its core. Like holding a dinner in honor of someone but not inviting the guest of honor. You enjoy the special music, you enjoy the fellowship with each other, the dinner was wonderful, but the guest of honor was curiously absent. But you have become so adept at arraigning and organizing the dinner that the guest of honor’s absence is not even noticed. The entire spectacle has become about the dinner itself.

Do we really think that Sunday after Sunday, week after week, month after month, and year after year, people meet together to worship God and never does God move in such a way that they remain at the church house for the entire day, or at least for many hours? Are we really suggesting that the God of the Universe meets with us every Sunday and arranges His presence and His ministry so as to conform to our redundant schedule? Is that what we want the world to believe? So meeting with the Risen Christ, and allowing the ministry of the Spirit to change our lives, requires less time than a football game?

So what has happened to us? We have manipulated the Christian faith and made it conform to our culture. The church gatherings on Sunday mornings are cultural expressions of a popular religion but they have no real power and they elicit only a two hour “sacrifice” which is rewarded by special music and flowery speeches and smiling fellowship. It is usually at this juncture where the “orthodox” crowd tunes me out. We love to hear about Osteen and Bell and Warren and even Obama, but when the inventory begins to invade our doctrinal fort we retreat immediately.

So who seeks the Lord these days? Many claim they already have a Biblically sound statement of faith and theology, so they need not seek the Lord. So you see what has happened? The orthodox crowd is content with their “orthodoxy” and satisfies their own spiritual lethargy by feasting on the errors of others. Not only do I disavow Rob Bell’s theology, but I boldly point out his errors. So I must be filled with God’s power and my spiritual life needs only minor tweaking, if that. That mentality leads to a practice of ecclesiastical traditions rather than a vibrant spiritual church where seeking God is the desire of our very lives. The way the evangelical church prays is an enormous scandal.

Do not think that I speak as someone who has arrived, or as one who can point to my own prayer life as the complete example. I do not. But I do speak as someone who has heard the Spirit and I loudly proclaim that all of us need to stop, see what the Spirit reveals, and with a broken spirit of repentance rebuild the walls of prayer personally and collectively. What would happen if your church said this month they would gather only to pray on Sunday mornings? Attendance would decrease and perhaps the local assembly would lose members. But if at the end of such a month you had a famous Christian singer on a Sunday morning, well the attendance would return to normal.

The end is very near. The deception deepens and widens. And those who embrace the true Christ have fallen asleep. While we stand guard atop the wall for enemies outside the camp, our own camp has slidden into a spiritual state of comatose. Our God is a doctrine, and the paltry expressions of prayer are filled with verbal genuflects to that doctrine. We can come before a Holy God and speak to Him with redundant petitions and familiar religious phrases and with no tears and no trembling lips and especially with no changed lives we can say “Amen”. Just who do we think we are speaking with? A concept? A doctrine? Or is He a consuming fire who loves us with an everlasting love but wishes to change us into His very image?

God is now a wax figure, smiling and waving to the Sunday morning crowds. The situation in the world and in the church is dire, and yet one Sunday reflects the past one and the next one. The spiritual crisis worsens by the day but the church marches on imprisoned by its structure, its debt, its schedule, its entertainment, its false contentment, and its well worn traditions. And Jesus correctly asked if He could even find faith when He returns. Unless there is an unbound and startling move of the Holy Spirit that rushes through God’s church and washes away the ecclesiastical façade we have constructed, then there is little hope for the world.

But of one thing we can be certain. This coming week will be just like last week. And next week? Just push the replay button and enjoy. Niccolò Machiavelli would be proud.

Bishop David Livingstone Kiganda
Hullo People around Kampala Tomorrow is the last day of the Money Makers Convetion. Today We had Frank Gashumba and Mr. Mukalazi The director of Homesdallen Schools. Please don\t miss tomorrow at Christianity focus centre. It is Business and wealth creation strictly.

Bishop David Kiganda recently  organized a Money makers convention, from 5-6, September, 2013 where some of the speakers are not born again Christians . I know some people are going to get mad at me for attacking an ‘anointed man of God’. But what makes me wondering is; why do pastors spend a lot time preparing  people to be comfortable in this world??? When you look at all the messages taught in the church in Uganda today, you will discover that pastors are struggling hard to make people comfortable in this world. There are not so much concerned about the eternal destination of believers which is heaven. Many pastors just like the people in their  churches are eating the world but slowly losing their souls. Pastor Kiganda has been so much infested with the rotten American prosperity gospel and therefore I’m not surprised by this Money makers convention idea.   He has in the past  made incredibly  un scriptural statements such as:

  • Without money there is no gospel

  • The Jesus riding on a donkey is very different from the Jesus walking on foot because no body claps for the Jesus walking  foot.

  • A poor preacher  can not attract people  to salvation .

  • The Poverty of born again Christians prevents people from getting saved.
Mr.Frank Gashumba, a  professed staunch catholic was one of the speakers at Pastor Kinganda's money making convention

Let us ask our selves the following questions:

  • Could Apostle Paul or any of the other Apostles of Jesus ever come up with bogus Conventions such as; Money makers convention?

  • How can a person who is truly born again be attracted to a non saved millionaire catholic’s gospel on how to make money?

  • Could the Lord Jesus ever sit people down and begin to tell them how to be wealth in this world?

  • Could the Lord Jesus Christ even call Rich un saved Jews and Roman to teach his disciples how to make money?

  • Does the money making conference bring people out of the world or into the world?

  • Does the bible talk of people who went to hell because they were  poor?

  • Did the increasing wealth of the catholic church make the catholic church more scriptural or more apostate?

  • Isn’t true that wealth blinds us from our transitory connection to this world?

Concluding remarks
I know Conventions such as the Money makers Convention are so enticing because they appeal to our flesh however, they are bogus to the kingdom of heaven. The bible tells us of  poor Lazarus who made it to heaven and  the rich man ended  up in hell. If wealth attracts people to salvation why did the rich man fail to make it.

Can GMOs achieve food sovereignty for Uganda?

By Peter Kanyandago

Posted  Monday, September 2  2013 at  01:00

In Summary
The claim that GMOs will solve the hunger problem is not verified. The world produces enough food to feed humanity, but of this 30-50 per cent is either not harvested or wasted.

Uganda is concerned about ensuring food security, now also called food sovereignty, for its entire people. Attaining food sovereignty implies that one eats food of good quality, with the nutrients that the body needs, and also one must take food in sufficient quantities.

The Biotechnology and Biosafety Bill, 2012, which is before our Parliament, is essentially about putting in place the right conditions to use GMOs safely. GMOs stands for Genetically Modified Organisms - also called genetically engineered seeds or foods. The Bill in question has raised controversy because of some health, scientific and environmental questions which are not yet completely resolved in respect of GMOs.

Aware that many Ugandans go hungry, and others are malnourished, no one in his/her right mind would oppose any move to promote food sovereignty. However, Michael J. Ssali’s article, “Uganda needs to adapt (sic) GMOs and biotechnology” in the Daily Monitor of August 28, gives a general impression that the people opposed to adopting GMOs do not want Ugandans to eat well and enough. He argues that humankind has always interfered with and manipulated nature. The examples he gives however do not correspond to what happens in the case of GMOs.

As the phrase indicates, genetic modification means you modify the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which is the main constituent of chromosomes and is the carrier of genetic information of each living organism. Through genetic modification or engineering, you can grow a cabbage on an ear of a cat! Most genetic modification in crops involves use of a bacteria such Bacillus thurigiensis (Bt) and herbicide tolerant technologies. The latter application is to equip the GMOs to resist spraying of herbicides which kill the weeds in which GMOs are growing without killing the crops. Taking all this into account, the idea currently accepted at official level in the US that GMOs are “substantially equivalent” to natural crops cannot be correct.

Questions about the safety of GMOs have been raised by the pioneering research of Dr Arpad Pustzai who worked at the Rowett Research Institute in Scotland in 1998. He was sacked when his findings questioned safe use of GMOs. His research has been complemented by that of the Russian scientist, Irina Ermakova. Add to this the work of Gilles-Eric Seralini et al., for example their publication in the International Journal of Biological Sciences in 2009 and another in Food and Chemical Toxicology published in 2012, which focused on Monsanto’s genetically modified NK603 corn.

Detailed references and copies of these articles can be availed on request. The methodology of the authors in the last was strongly opposed by the pro-GMO groups, but the authors have been vindicated even by the European Food Safety Authority, which had initially called into question the authors’ approach.

Mr Ssali makes a cursory reference to the problem of GMOs contaminating natural crops, and yet contamination has legal and economic implications. In May, South Korea and Japan boycotted US commercial wheat when it was discovered that it was contaminated by GMO wheat. In the US itself, a farmer in Oregon found GMO wheat growing in his field and this has raised very serious concerns, which are being addressed by the United States Department of Agriculture.

The fact is that the spread and contamination of genetically modified grains cannot be controlled when they have been produced and grown. This problem, therefore, is neither simple or fiction.

Given the real questions that have not yet been answered, the French President has confirmed moratorium on GM maize. On March 25, there were more than 2 million people in 436 cities from 52 countries who participated in a march against Monsanto who happens to be the biggest player in the field of GMOs. Last month, Chileans in more than nine cities staged a protest against what they called a “Monsanto law” aiming to allow development of GMOs.

It should also be noted that introduction of GMOs will necessarily take away the farmers’ ability and right to produce their own seed and will also mean using more pesticides. The health and environmental risks involved are not to be neglected. Moreover, the claim that GMOs will solve the hunger problem is not verified. The world produces enough food to feed humanity, but of this 30-50 per cent is either not harvested or wasted.

The way forward, I believe, is to ensure that farmers have control over production of seeds and food at local level. We should also join the international search for working on climate changes which disrupt weather patterns. All this should be an invitation to our MPs and scientists to first take stock of what is happening elsewhere before we put all our hopes in a technology that is more bound to compromise food than promoting it.

‘It’s a Sin, But I’m Not Against It:’ ‘Christian’ Pride Fest Attendees Affirm Homosexuality

http://christiannews.net/2013/09/08/its-a-sin-but-im-not-against-it-professing-christian-pride-fest-attendees-affirm-homosexuality/

CHARLOTTE Responses to a recent survey conducted at the 2013 Charlotte Pride Fest highlighted the ongoing ‘moral malaise’ of modern society, a Christian commentator reports.

The poll, entitled Are You Open Minded?, was conducted by friends of Dr. Michael Brown, a Christian author and host of the radio talk show Line of Fire. Over 100 attendees participated in the survey, 70 percent of which identified as homosexual.

The first question presented to attendees asked, “Do you agree with the statement, ‘I have the right to marry the one I love?’” Out of the 102 respondents, only two disagreed.

A follow-up was then presented, asking, “Are there any exceptions?” Examples were provided to some, such as polyamory, polygamy and consensual adult incest. Some surveyors also asked if there was an age of consent, and what that should be.

While 53 percent of respondents agreed that there were exceptions, most notably expressing concerns about pedophilia, 23 percent said that love is love, and a person should have a right to marry whoever they have feelings for as long as it “doesn’t hurt anyone.”

Two professing Christian girls, who were in attendance to support family members who are homosexuals, especially stood out to Brown following their response to the question, “Is it bigoted to believe that homosexual practice is sin?”

“I’ve said this,” one of the girls replies, “Being gay is a lifestyle; having gay sex is a sin.”

“You believe it’s a sin?” one of the interviewers asks.

“It’s a sin, but I’m not against it,” she replies. “I think you’re forgiven no matter what.”

“So, if you’re a Christian, you’re forgiven of the sin?” he inquires.

“Absolutely,” she responds. “You’re forgiven for everything except not believing.”

“So, if you engage in that sex which the Bible defines as sin, it’s still okay as long you believe?” the interviewer asks.

“The only way the Bible defines it as sin is because a man and a woman were put here on this earth [with] what we were given to recreate,” the girl responds, “and so it’s a sin [because] you can’t recreate if you’re having gay sex–lesbian or gay.”

“So, you support people having gay sex?” the interviewer inquirers.

“Yeah, I believe you can’t help your heart sometimes,” she replies.

As footage of the poll has attained several thousand views since being posted to YouTube, many have commented that the video is “heartbreaking” to watch.

“My heart breaks for them!” one commenter wrote. “The deception is thick on these two!”

“That really was amazing,” another stated. “Forgiven no matter what? Forgiven without repentance? ‘You can’t help your heart;’ that makes it acceptable?”

“Imagine Jesus hanging on that tree for your sake and dying for you, paying the highest price for your sin to be done with–such a demonstration of LOVE!” a third exclaimed. “What’s your response to Him? To sin even more?”

Other responses also saddened Brown, as 56 percent of participants stated that it is bigoted to believe that there is only one way to God, and 71 percent said that religious exemptions should not be allowed for those who do not wish to participate in same-sex ceremonies.

The televangelist claimed Operation Blessing was giving vital aid in response to the 1994 Rwandan crisis. A documentary opening at the Toronto film festival paints a less flattering picture

Thursday 5 September 2013

One of the stranger sights of the refugee crisis that followed the 1994 Rwandan genocide was of stretcher-bearers rushing the dying to medical tents, with men running alongside reciting Bible verses to the withering patients.

The bulk of the thousands of doctors and nurses struggling to save lives – as about 40,000 people died of cholera – were volunteers for the international medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The Bible readers were hired by the American televangelist and former religious right presidential candidate, Pat Robertson, and his aid organisation, Operation Blessing International.

But on Robertson's US television station, the Christian Broadcasting Network, that reality was reversed, as he raised millions of dollars from loyal followers by claiming Operation Blessing was at the forefront of the international response to the biggest refugee crisis of the decade. It's a claim he continues to make, even though an official investigation into Robertson's operation in Virginia accused him of "fraudulent and deceptive" claims when he was running an almost non-existent aid operation.

"We brought the largest contingent of medicine into Goma in Zaire, at least the first and the largest," Robertson said as recently as last year on his TV station.

Now a new documentary lays bare the extent of the misrepresentations of Operation Blessing's activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire, that it says continue to this day.

Mission Congo, by David Turner and Lara Zizic, opens at the Toronto film festival on Friday. It describes how claims about the scale of aid to Rwandan refugees were among a number of exaggerated or false assertions about the activities of Operation Blessing which pulls in hundreds of millions of dollars a year in donations, much of it through Robertson's televangelism. They include characterising a failed large-scale farming project as a huge success, and claims about providing schools and other infrastructure.

But some of the most damaging criticism of Robertson comes from former aid workers at Operation Blessing, who describe how mercy flights to save refugees were diverted hundreds of miles from the crisis to deliver equipment to a diamond mining concession run by the televangelist.

Throughout the Rwandan refugee crisis, when more than 1 million people fled into neighbouring Zaire and started dying en masse of cholera, Robertson told his viewers that Operation Blessing was at the forefront of saving lives.

"It was the most important first medical shipment on the scene out of everything," he said of one aid delivery as he appealed for donations.
In another broadcast, Robertson said Operation Blessing was saving thousands of lives.

"The death toll in this particular camp went down to almost zero because of our people being there," he said.

Robertson claimed that Operation Blessing sent plane-loads of doctors.

"These are tents set up with our doctors and our medical teams that came from here to work as hard as they could to save lives," Robertson said over pictures of a large tent of children on drips being tended by nurses and doctors.

But the film was of MSF medical staff at work. Operation Blessing had just one tent and a total of seven doctors. MSF officials who worked in Goma told the documentary-makers that they had no recollection of even seeing Operation Blessing – let alone working with it.

"What's really unacceptable is that Operation Blessing took photographs of MSF workers and then used this in their fundraising," said Samantha Bolton, the former MSF spokeswoman in Goma.

Officials from other aid operations said that Operation Blessing was not anywhere near the first or largest groups working in Goma. Jessie Potts, the operations manager for Robertson in Goma in 1994, told Mission Congo that the medicines that did arrive were not of great use in fighting the cholera epidemic.

"We got a lot of Tylenol. Too much. I never did understand that. We got enough Tylenol to supply all of Zaire. God, I never saw as much in my life," he said.

Then, Potts said, suddenly everything changed. "Operation Blessing, several weeks into the operation, decided not to send any more medical teams," he said. The flights to Goma dried up.

Robert Hinkle, the chief pilot for Operation Blessing in Zaire in 1994, said he received new orders. "They began asking me: can we haul a thousand-pound dredge over? I didn't know what the dredging deal was about," he said.

The documentary describes how dredges, used to suck up diamonds from river beds, were delivered hundreds of miles from the crisis in Goma to a private commercial firm, African Development Company, registered in Bermuda and wholly owned by Robertson. ADC held a mining concession near the town of Kamonia on the far side of the country.

"Mission after mission was always just getting eight-inch dredgers, six-inch dredgers … and food supplies, quads, jeeps, out to the diamond dredging operation outside of Kamonia," Hinkle told the film-makers.

The pilot said he joined Operation Blessing to help people. Of the 40 flights he flew into Congo, just two delivered aid. The others were associated with the diamond mining. "We're not doing anything for those people," he said. "After several months I was embarrassed to have Operation Blessing on the airplane's tail." He had the lettering removed.

Robertson ordered an airstrip carved out of the bush next to the town of Kamonia, 800 miles from Goma. On his television show he left the impression this was part of his aid operation.

The televangelist was also raising donations for Operation Blessing's other activities in Congo. These included a 100,000-acre farm near the town of Dumi, which Robertson claimed had produced a large harvest of corn and was a "tremendous feeding station".

"The soil is unbelievable. You stick anything in the ground and it grows. You put a shovel in and it starts sprouting," he said in appealing for donations.

In fact, the farm at Dumi had already failed. The soil was of poor quality and Operation Blessing brought seeds from the US unsuited to the region.

To this day, Robertson continues to solicit donations on the back of the project, on the grounds that although the farm failed, it left a legacy with a school that established a "foundation of education" in the town. 2011 posting on the Operation Blessing website described the school as "thriving".

"Despite the turbulence over the years, the children of Dumi still gather to learn and grow in the little school house on the plateau," it said.

Yet Mission Congo visited the Dumi school at the same time and filmed it abandoned, stripped of its desks and falling down.

Similarly, local leaders in Kamonia said that they were promised schools, roads and a hospital by Robertson's mining company – but none of it materialised.

Robertson's activities in Congo were initially exposed by a Virginia newspaper, the Virginian Pilot, in the 1990s. The investigation by Bill Sizemore prompted the attorney general in Virginia, where Operation Blessing is registered, to order a probe by the state's office of consumer affairs.

Its report concluded that Robertson made "fraudulent and deceptive" statements with claims to be ferrying doctors and medical aid to Goma when he was delivering diamond-mining equipment. It accused Operation Blessing of "misrepresenting" what its flights were doing, and of saying that the airstrip at Kamonia was part of the aid operation when it was "for the benefit of ADC's mining operation".

It also said Robertson had falsely portrayed the Dumi farm as hugely successful when it had already failed.

"Pat Robertson made material claims, via television appeals, regarding the relief efforts. These statements are refuted by the evidence in this case," the report said.

But the Virginian authorities declined to prosecute Robertson, describing his misrepresentations as a "blemish". Mission Congo notes that leading state politicians were recipients of large donations from Robertson.

Robertson has been embroiled in mining controversies elsewhere in Africa. He supported the then president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, during that country's civil war without revealing at the time that he had an $8m investment in a Liberian gold mine. Taylor was already indicted by a UN war crimes tribunal at the time and was later convicted of crimes against humanity.

Robertson has consistently denied the accusation of misusing donations and claimed that the Virginia authorities' failure to prosecute effectively cleared him of wrongdoing. He has acknowledged the diamond mining operation but said that it was small scale and produced few gems.

By Associated Press, Published: September 12

MULBERRY, Fla. — Law enforcement arrested a Florida pastor Wednesday as he drove to a park to light nearly 3,000 Qurans on fire to protest the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Polk County sheriff’s deputies arrested Pastor Terry Jones, 61, and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., 34, on felony charges as he drove a pickup truck towing a large barbecue-style grill filled with Qurans soaked in kerosene. He had said he was heading to a nearby park to burn 2,998 Qurans — one for every victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Sheriff’s officials said they would hold a news conference later Wednesday to discuss specific charges.

Mulberry’s mayor, along with area elected officials, a sheriff’s deputy and several Polk County residents have talked about the need to express love and tolerance for all faiths on Sept. 11.

Jones is the pastor of a small evangelical Christian church. He first gained attention in 2010 when he planned to burn a Quran on 9/11, although he eventually called it off. His congregation did burn the Muslim holy book in March 2011 and last year he promoted an anti-Muslim film. All three incidents sparked violence in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

The most violent protest happened after the 2011 Quran burning as hundreds of protesters stormed a U.N. compound in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners, including four Nepalese guards.

Jones has repeatedly ignored pleas from the U.S. military asking him not to stage his protests. Military officials say his actions put American and Western troops in Afghanistan and elsewhere in danger.

Mulberry is a town of about 3,000 between Orlando and Tampa and has no connection to Jones’ church, which recently moved out of its Gainesville building.

An Egyptian court convicted Jones, along with seven Egyptian Coptic Christians in absentia, sentencing them to death on charges linked to the film. The ruling was seen as largely symbolic because Jones and the other defendants live outside of Egypt.

Just last week, a federal judge in Michigan issued a summary judgment in favor of Jones and his organization, Stand Up America Now, against the city of Dearborn for requiring Jones and his organization to sign a city-issued agreement in order to speak on public property in front of a Dearborn mosque in 2012.

Earlier Wednesday, about 75 people gathered In Mulberry for an interfaith prayer service to counter Jones’ actions.

Mike Ghouse, who has organized a 9/11 prayer service in his home state of Texas for nine years, brought his event to Mulberry because of Jones’ planned Quran burning. He initially had planned to hold the service in Texas but teamed with a group of Mulberry residents who had organized an anti-Jones Facebook page.

“Everyone has a right to believe what they believe,” said Ghouse, adding that it was Jones’ right as an American to express himself. Others said that while Jones was free to say or do whatever he wanted, the people of Mulberry didn’t want the world to think that the residents condone or agree with Jones’ views.

“We don’t buy what Jones is selling,” said Polk County resident Butch Rahman.

Corruption? What Corruption? In Uganda Impunity Reigns Supreme

http://www.blackstarnews.com/global-politics/africa/corruption-what-corruption-in-uganda-impunity-reigns-supreme.html

 September 07,2013

[Commentary]

In order to encourage a national debate on Uganda's problems and to explore solutions The Black Star News invites nationals to submit essays of reasonable length addressing the topic " Where Uganda is Today And The Changes We Need."

Impunity! That is the elephant in the room for Uganda.

A nation wallowing in the mud of impunity can only be sure of one thing. Zigzag growth and development. And that is just about where Uganda is.

We have let the claws of impunity grip every single system of our country. We have become an audience, looking on as its tentacles take the core of our citizenry hostage. We have turned what Sir Winston Churchill observed as the "Pearl of Africa" into "A Pearl of Impunity." And that is when we dug our own grave.

But behold, good news is that we can actually fill the grave and move forward as a nation. Only and only if, however, we solve the jig-saw puzzle that impunity is.

We are talking of senior government officials diverting millions of dollars of donor monies to personal accounts, withdrawing funds using personal credit cards -- monies meant to be delivered to hundreds of thousands of people who, for 20 years, suffered the brunt of war from biting poverty and agony.

Where do they take the money? To build lavish mansions; to gamble in top casinos in Las Vegas; and, to accounts in foreign banks. Do we know about this? Oh yes, this information is written on the wall of every Ugandan. What do we do? We glorify them as the "movers and shakers" of society; in church we give them standing ovations upon arrival and call them "sharp." That's Impunity for you!

It is in Uganda where we have a swarm of laws against corruption that are never applied. The country competes for the top most position on the Transparency International Rankings of most corrupt nations. Because of impunity the country's anti-corruption laws are applied selectively. The so-called “ big fish” are immune to these laws and in most cases protected under the guise of being “ whistleblowers”.

We pay thrice higher the average price of building a road in the morning. By afternoon the same road is developing cracks; in the evening this road is filled with potholes and causing untold road carnage through accidents.

What do we do? We don’t care! Yes, even when we know the thieves. We may arrest them, parade their faces in the media but that is where the "do it for formality" game ends and then we are back to point zero. Who wins? Impunity!

It is in Uganda where patients go to public hospitals and catch diseases rather than get medication. It is here where mortality rate is high because access to maternity care is a reserve for those who can fly their relatives out of the country for treatment; and yes, it is here where doctors use torches in operating theatres because there is just no money for hospitals to have sustained power.

Meanwhile, Global Fund monies from overseas, intended to save lives of malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV/Aids patients were stolen by government officials.

Millions of dollars was injected into investigating the crime against humanity. The thieves were identified and named. Oops! They walk free on our streets and we continue to elect them to office.

Impunity!

What word best describes this: We pay a member of parliament tens of thousands of dollars and all he does is sign the attendance register, walk out without official leave, attend to his business and smile all the way to the bank. Meanwhile he will return to the August House to vote on-- Bills that oppress us; to pass supplementary budgets for the presidency; and the only time he speaks is when he is pushing for an extra allowance.

There is a reason why we vote them back to Parliament or we don’t recall them. The word is Impunity!

As a nation, our sense of right and wrong has been surrendered to impunity.

The men of the cassock accept posh cars from the president as an unwritten contract to simply watch when and as the state commits wrongs against their flock. They look on, mute, as their own who stand up against evils such as corruption are victimized and thrown into jail. They continue to preach the "good news" unto their people and go to bed with their oppressors. In the end, there is no one to say "this is wrong" and to hold others accountable.

If the media and civil society does, their voices will be suppressed, thanks to the big bull in the crowd.

By and large, for Uganda to transition, in all facets of life, we must strip ourselves of impunity. It is then that we shall feel ashamed as a nation that we lose over $200 million annually to corruption. Money that can help with many projects and go towards the $6 billion external debt.

It is only after our leaders are cured of impunity that they shall recognize that they are in office to foster better social service delivery, to care about the shame of our children having to study under trees instead of classrooms, and to be touched by mothers and babies dying day after day because of our squalid health care system.

We want a country where we put Uganda and Ugandans above self, family and ethnicity.

The very first article of our constitution vests power in us and it is that power which we must invoke to contribute to the making of the Uganda we desire for our generation and posterity.

Wednesday 11 September 2013

In comments likely to enhance his progressive reputation, Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences.

Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.

“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”

Robert Mickens, the Vatican correspondent for the Catholic journal The Tablet, said the pontiff’s comments were further evidence of his attempts to shake off the Catholic Church’s fusty image, reinforced by his extremely conservative predecessor Benedict XVI. “Francis is a still a conservative,” said Mr Mickens. “But what this is all about is him seeking to have a more meaningful dialogue with the world.”

In a welcoming response to the letter, Mr Scalfari said the Pope’s comments were “further evidence of his ability and desire to overcome barriers in dialogue with all”.

In July, Francis signalled a more progressive attitude on sexuality, asking: “If someone is gay and is looking for the Lord, who am I to judge him?”

Democratizing Africa's Wealth By Nationalizing Natural Resources

Mark P. Fancher

Marikana massacre
[Op-Ed: Africa]
A little more than a year ago, South African police opened fire on platinum mine workers engaged in a wildcat strike in Marikana, South Africa. When the smoke cleared, more than 30 strikers lay dead with dozens more injured.

Labor problems in South Africa’s mining industry remain unresolved because only days ago, 80,000 gold mineworkers went on strike complaining of “slave wages.”

Lesiba Seshoka of the National Union of Mineworkers is quoted as saying: “The union is aware of the devastating impact industrial action would have on the economy, which is largely a White man’s economy with no benefits for poor Black mineworkers.”

Negotiations broke down and the union demanded a 60% increase in wages after receiving an offer of a 6.5 percent raise. There is a high level of resentment because the union contends that corporate executives have continued to award themselves huge bonuses notwithstanding slumping South African gold sales. Another mineworkers’ union argues that the wage structure for mine laborers is the same as that used during South Africa’s apartheid era. Both observers and those involved have expressed fears of violence.

South Africa’s continuing labor woes suggest that it may be time to commence an escape from the traditional White owner/Black laborer paradigm.

For example, in neighboring Zimbabwe the government has called for the “indigenization” of foreign-owned mines. Under the plan, such mines would be seized and then controlling interest would be transferred to Black Zimbabwean investors. Certainly the potential would remain for the new Black owners to establish an exploitative, oppressive relationship with their employees, but the removal of these valuable natural resources from foreign corporate control is a significant step toward genuine African self-determination.

The South African mineworker dilemma brings into sharp focus the question that has been deliberately ignored, but which has loomed large since the first African finger was lifted decades ago to resist colonialism. That is, who will own and control Africa’s oil, diamonds, gold, platinum, and other mineral wealth?

During the latter phase of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa the issue was not effectively addressed by Nelson Mandela’s organization, the African National Congress (ANC). This was likely a deliberate, strategic decision based on an intuitive, if not informed understanding of the violent lengths to which the western corporate establishment will go to retain control of its African operations and resources that are worth uncountable billions of dollars.

The result of the ANC approach was a relatively peaceful transition from White minority to Black majority occupation of government positions, but it merely delayed violent confrontations between the suffering African masses who rightfully demand economic justice and western corporate exploiters.

The Marikana massacre is a prime example. In anticipation of these conflicts, the U.S., acting in the interest of western corporations, has developed U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) as a means of engaging in violent African conflicts with finesse and through proxy African armed forces that AFRICOM trains and directs.

There is no time like the present to return to the question of who will own and control Africa’s wealth. Indigenization is a good start, but the ultimate answer must inevitably involve full-scale nationalization of all major natural resources with genuine control exercised by all of Africa’s people through government structures that ensure not only political democracy, but real economic democracy as well.

Some may worry that nationalization might prompt foreign owners to flee with their capital and machinery, leaving Africans unable to mine their own wealth. However, that and other hazards can be avoided with careful planning.

Foreign owners can be alerted in advance to plans for seizures and a timetable for withdrawal can be developed collaboratively. Winding down and withdrawal can be accomplished in phases giving owners opportunities to leave or even enter into contracts with the African governments for continuing non-proprietary involvement in the country’s mining industry.

Incentive for foreign corporate cooperation with this process can come from regional unity and the consequent elimination of the option of simply relocating to a neighboring country.

In the event that an African country is forced to go it alone without foreign capital and machinery, an investment of the nation’s treasury --in affordable increments if necessary-- in the needed means of production would be money well spent given that mining is highly profitable and likely to result in very high returns for the country.

As always, the risk in all of this is that western governments will manufacture a “crisis” that supposedly justifies a military invasion and the takeover of mining operations.

This only underscores the vital importance of a continent-wide understanding of the high stakes and the necessity of continental unity in the face of such a threat, even if only a single African country is in direct jeopardy. Unity to that degree can prevail, because even western powers would not relish a war against the entire African continent.

Governor Evans Kidero slaps Rachel Shebesh, then quickly forgets

Updated Friday, September 6th 2013 at 22:30 GMT +3

By Moses Michira
Nairobi, Kenya:Drama unfolded at City Hall Friday after Nairobi GovernorEvans Kidero allegedly slapped Women Representative Rachel Shebesh during a heated verbal exchange outside his office.

Shebesh, known for her aggressive style, had confronted Kidero over the ongoing county employees’ strike, which has paralysed operations, over unpaid salaries.

The Nairobi women representative had earlier addressed the protesting workers outside Kidero’s office before proceeding to the Governor’s chambers to seek audience with him. Witnesses told The Standard there was a heated exchange though it was unclear what she uttered that could have infuriated Kidero.

According to a video footage circulated on social media, Shebesh is seen outside the Governor’s office jostling for position.

A short but heated argument ensues after Kidero emerged from his office, before he is seen gesticulating and slapping Shebesh, who momentarily staggers before men believed to be her aides steady her.

Kidero then retreats to his office as security personnel intervene.

“Kidero, you have slapped me? You have slapped me Kidero? You have slapped me?” Shebesh is heard crying out. The Governor’s action as captured in the video footage — that attracted lots of reactions on social media — was swift.

One of her aides is also heard asking Kidero why he slapped the legislator. After the slap, the crowd is seen scampering away. Minutes later, Kidero convened a press conference where he claimed he could not remember slapping anybody.

No stranger to controversy
“As far as I can recollect, I was in my office and I do not remember slapping anybody, all I know is that there was a scuffle at my office,” said Kidero. The 4pm incident created a buzz online, with most condemning the leaders for the incident.

Shebesh is not new to controversy. She shot to the limelight early this year when she led women leaders storming offices of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to protest alleged removal of Othaya MP Mary Wambui from the list of candidates for the area’s parliamentary election.

Shebesh reportedly recorded a statement minutes after the incident at a police station inside KICC, some 300 metres across the road from City Hall.

Moments later, Kidero also recorded his statement at the Central Police Station. It was not immediately possible to confirm what either leader said in their respective statements. The matter is, however, expected to drag to court in the coming week.

The confrontation stole the limelight from another altercation between Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko and a radio presenter that happened the day before, in a morning show.

But the fracas between the two elected Nairobi county leaders is not nearly the only high-profile case witnessed in recent times. Ms Nancy Baraza was forced to resign as Deputy Chief Justice after a confrontation with a female guard at a high-end shopping mall in Nairobi on New Year’s Eve of 2012.

Baraza, now a law lecturer at the University of Nairobi, was accused of pinching the nose of Rebecca Kerubo after a brief confrontation that earned the then deputy CJ the title of the ‘nose-pincher’.

Last month, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri was involved in a confrontation with a female police officer. He is accused of assaulting the female officer when she sought to inspect the vehicle he was travelling in, in Nakuru. The matter is before court.

Mormon Church Grows In Africa Because Converts Don't Know Racist History

Lee B. Baker

September 10,2013

The Mormon Church spreads in Africa
For several years now, every Tuesday evening I have had the great privilege of addressing the Christian and Mormon listeners of Worship FM 101.7 in Monrovia, the capital City of Liberia, West Africa.

I have come to know several of the station managers and a number of the more frequent callers to the weekly program.  Through their comments, questions and photographs, I have been genuinely moved to see the application of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Over the past few months the question of racist teachings in the Book of Mormon and from the past Leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been on the minds of the Liberian converts to Mormonism and the many Christians who struggle to understand how such a Church can be growing in Africa.

I believe the answer is relatively simple; it has been the perfect merging of a sincere lack of knowledge on the part of the Mormon converts and a disturbing lack of accountability on the part of the Mormon leaders.  A near total lack of knowledge across Africa specific to some of the more explicit teachings found within the Mormon Scriptures, principally that Black Skin is a representation of wickedness and even less information concerning the racism and bigotry openly and officially taught by the early Leadership of the Mormon Church.

This combined with the current Church Leadership’s inability to clearly and specifically reject its own racist teachings both in print and from its past Senior Leadership, has left the Black Race with only a short irresponsible and offensively juvenile Official Statement that claims the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knows very little about its own race-based policy that had lasted for well over 100 years:

“It is not known precisely why, how or when this restriction began in the Church, but it has ended.”

Maintaining a detailed and comprehensive history of every aspect and teaching of the Church has been both one of the hallmarks and one of the downfalls of Mormon Church.  Within the relatively young Church, authoritative documentation, however corrupt it may have been, has never been in short supply.  Each of the Senior Leaders of the Mormon Church has had several official biographers as well as an army of Church authorized historians to record for the faithful Mormon all facets of the History of the Church.  In fact, one of my first of many “Callings” in the Mormon Church was that of a Ward (Congregational) Historian, long before I became a Bishop.

The peculiar assertion that the Mormon Church itself does not know the details of its very own race-based policy of restricting the Blacksfrom holding the Priesthood is tremendously embarrassing for all Mormons and exceptionally degrading for anyone who actually believes it.

As a former local leader of the Mormon Church, I have repeatedly assured the African members of the Mormon Church that the documents and “Scriptures” I have read to them over the air are both Authorized and Official for the time period they are relevant to.  I clearly state the current position of total acceptance of all Races by the Church, but I must highlight the fact that the Book of Mormon still carries it’s obviously racist message that dark skin was a curse and Jesus was white.

I have said many times on-air that like the Mormon Missionaries, I too believe that every African should have a copy of the Book of Mormon, if only to learn the truly racist teaching of the Mormons.

I have and will continue to teach the African Nations from the authentic Mormon Scriptures and the Church History documents, which I had purchased from the Mormon Church to know my past responsibilities as a Mormon Bishop. The official records of the Mormon Church include many jokes and sermons given within the Official Semi-Annual General Conference of the faithful Mormons, using the “N-word”, Darky and Sambo.  Additionally, these Church published books record nearly 100 graphic sermons and lessons that clearly teach the principle, practice and policy that Black Skin was, is and will remain forever the Curse of Cain.

Only in the recent past has the “Complete History” of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints come to the attention of its own membership, much less to the under developed regions of the world.  As this information is discovered, an ever increasing number of members of the Mormon Church have come into a personal crisis of faith, most notably Elder Hans Mattsson[3] of Sweden, a General Authority of the Mormon Church who has gone public with his doubts and questions.

Not unique to Africa, has been the Mormon Church’s training of young Missionaries to strictly avoid any discussion of several of the more embarrassing, yet true, teachings of the 183 year old Church. Chief among these subjects has been Polygamy and Blacks and the Priesthood.

With the smooth talent of a skilled politician, the Mormon Church has ended its Official Statement with the following hypocritical and deceitful, but technically accurate quote:

“The origins of priesthood availability are not entirely clear.  Some explanations with respect to this matter were made in the absence of direct revelation and references to these explanations are sometimes cited in publications.  These previous personal statements do not represent Church doctrine.”

As a former Mormon Bishop and member of the Mormon Church for over 32 years, let me be of some help with the translation of this very carefully crafted message. The two key noteworthy phrases are: “in the absence of direct revelation” and “These previous personal statements do not represent Church doctrine.”

I will address the most obvious first, clearly the “previous statements” from the Church and its Leadership “do not” represent the Church doctrine today.  The policy was reversed in 1978 and there is no question as to the policy today. The hypocritical deception is that between 1845 and 1978 those “statements” did, very much “DID” not “DO” represent past Church doctrine.  Yet, I do give full credit to the clever Mormon authors and editors for their most skillful use of the English language.

And finally, the most revealing and enlightening statement from the Mormon Church is: “in the absence of direct revelation”.  So then, it is incredibly true and accurate that without any mockery or sarcasm; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had for nearly 100 years, restricted a significant portion of the human race, millions and millions from God’s intended blessings of Eternal Marriage, Salvation and even Godhood, without knowing why they did it, all without “direct revelation”?

This Official Statement of religious shame and embarrassment comes from the Headquarters of a Church that claims to be guided in all things by “direct revelation”.  How then, did such an exclusive doctrine based on prejudice, bigotry and racism become so accepted, so authoritative, so convincing and so commanding for so long, without “direct revelation”?

As a former Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I give testimony that what they have stated is true, in that, they are racist and do not hide the History of the Church from its members or the public, this, their Official Statement on Race and the Church demonstrates that fact.

I believe that the truly wicked teachings as well as the repulsive history of the Mormon Church concerning Polygamy, Polyandry, Blood Atonement, and Blacks and the Priesthood is available for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.

It is my prayer that all Mormons and non-Mormons will come to know the true history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  That every man, woman and young adult on the earth today will find the time to read the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price from cover to cover to see the deception they hold, and then read the Word of God with the eyes of a child, and follow the true Jesus, the true Christ found only in the Bible.

Why Race Is Still a Problem for Mormons?

“I BELIEVE that in 1978 God changed his mind about black people,” sings Elder Kevin Price in the Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon.” The line is meant to be funny, and it is — in part because it’s true.

In a June 1978 letter, the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaimed that “all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color.” Men of African descent could now hold the priesthood, the power and authority exercised by all male members of the church in good standing. Such a statement was necessary, because until then, blacks were relegated to a very second-class status within the church.

The revelation may have lifted the ban, but it neither repudiated it nor apologized for it. “It doesn’t make a particle of difference,” proclaimed the Mormon apostle Bruce R. McConkie a few months later, “what anybody ever said about the Negro matter before the first day of June of this year, 1978.”

Mr. McConkie meant such words to encourage Mormons to embrace the new revelation, and he may have solemnly believed that it made the history of the priesthood ban irrelevant. But to many others around the country, statements of former church leaders about “the Negro matter” do, in fact, matter a great deal.

They cause pain to church members of African descent, provide cover for repugnant views and make the church an easy target for criticism and satire. The church would benefit itself and its members — and one member in particular, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee — by formally repudiating the priesthood ban and the racist theories that accompanied it.

Mormonism wasn’t always troubled by anti-black racism. In a country deeply stained by slavery and anti-black racism, the church, founded by Joseph Smith in 1830, was noteworthy for its relative racial egalitarianism. Smith episodically opposed slavery and tolerated the priesthood ordination of black men, at least one of whom, Elijah Abel, occupied a position of minor authority.

It was Smith’s successor, Brigham Young, who adopted the policies that now haunt the church. He described black people as cursed with dark skin as punishment for Cain’s murder of his brother. “Any man having one drop of the seed of Cane in him cannot hold the priesthood,” he declared in 1852. Young deemed black-white intermarriage so sinful that he suggested that a man could atone for it only by having “his head cut off” and spilling “his blood upon the ground.” Other Mormon leaders convinced themselves that the pre-existent spirits of black people had sinned in heaven by supporting Lucifer in his rebellion against God.

The priesthood ban had sweeping ecclesiastical consequences for black Mormons. They could not participate in the sacred ordinances, like the endowment ceremony (which prepares one for the afterlife) and sealings (which formally bind a family together), rites that Smith and Young taught were necessary to obtain celestial glory.

Of course, while perhaps unusual in its fervor and particular in its theories, the rhetoric of Mormon leaders was lamentably within the mainstream of white American opinion. White Christians of many denominational stripes used repugnant language to justify slavery and the inferiority of black people. Most accepted theories that the sins of Cain and Ham had cursed an entire race. Indeed, those white Americans who today express outrage over Mormon racism should remind themselves of their own forebears’ sins before casting stones at the Latter-day Saints.

Most Protestant denominations, however, gradually apologized for their past racism. In contrast, while Mormon leaders generically criticize past and present racism, they carefully avoid any specific criticism of past presidents and apostles, careful not to disrupt traditional reverence for the church’s prophets.

To an extent, this strategy has worked. The church is now much more diverse, with hundreds of thousands of members in Africa and many members of African descent in Latin America. In the United States, not all Mormons look like members of the Romney family: Mia Love, a daughter of Haitian immigrants and the Republican nominee for a Utah Congressional seat, proudly states that she has “never felt unwelcome in the church.”

Nevertheless, regardless of how outsiders would respond (audiences will still enjoy that line in “The Book of Mormon”), a fuller confrontation with the past would serve the church’s interests. Journalists frequently ask prominent Mormons like Mr. Romney and Ms. Love about the priesthood ban. African-Americans, both members and prospective converts, find the history distinctly unsettling. Statements by prior church presidents and apostles provide fodder for those Latter-day Saints — if small in number — who adhere to racist notions.

The church could begin leaving those problems behind if its leaders explained that their predecessors had confused their own racist views with God’s will and that the priesthood ban resulted from human error and limitations rather than a divine curse. Given the church’s ecclesiology, this step would be difficult.

Mormons have no reason to feel unusually ashamed of their church’s past racial restrictions, except maybe for their duration. Their church, like most other white American churches, was entangled in a deeply entrenched national sin.

Still, acknowledging serious errors on the part of past prophets inevitably raises questions about the revelatory authority of contemporary leaders. Such concerns, however, are not insurmountable for religious movements. One can look to the Bible for countless examples of patriarchs and prophets who acknowledged grave errors and moral lapses but still retained the respect of their people.

Likewise, the abiding love and veneration most Latter-day Saints have for their leaders would readily survive a fuller reckoning with their human frailties and flaws. The Mormon people need not believe they have perfect prophets, either past or present.

Drinking to the Gospel: Presbyterian Church in New Zealand Embraces Alcohol to Evangelize, Attract Members, Make Money

With promotional events like "Wine and theology evenings" and "Beer and barbeque" church services, congregants of New Zealand's dying Presbyterian Church are now embracing alcohol as an evangelism tool to attract more members and increase their bottom line according to a new study coming out of that country.

Highlighting new research by religion expert, Dr. Geoff Troughton of Victoria University of Wellington, in a Medical Xpress report on Tuesday, revealed that the Presbyterian Church's anti-alcohol campaign had slacked off radically since the 1990s to shore up their bottom line and attract more people to the dying church.

"Some churches are now experimenting with using alcohol as an evangelization tool. Rather than seeing alcohol consumption as a marker of secular culture in need of change, it has become part of efforts to promote Christianity. 'Wine and theology' evenings and 'beer and barbeque' church services are among the methods being explored," said Troughton in the report.

"Many churches are keen to make Christianity seem less unusual and more hospitable to outsiders. They want to reduce the barriers between the churches and society, so in this area they are increasingly reflecting mainstream social values," he added.

Troughton explained that the serving of alcohol at church events was now "less uncommon" even in those churches seeking to attract new members.

More than half of the churches surveyed in his study allowed conditional alcohol consumption on their grounds.

"That is a significant change," explained Troughton. "It has partly occurred for financial reasons, as it means that facilities can be hired out to a wider range of people, but it also reflects changing attitudes towards alcohol within the Church."

Troughton says the shifting attitudes did not just happen overnight but changed incrementally.

New Zealand's growing wine industry and the expansion of alcohol access via New Zealand's 1989 Sale of Liquor Act also help to influence the new norm.

The Church, he said, still maintained concern over the dangers of drinking but no longer treats alcohol as a core issue when considering policy.

Troughton highlighted that only a minority of the Presbyterian Church's members abstain from alcohol.

A Gallup poll last summer noted that 66 percent of Americans say they consume alcohol with drinkers consuming an average of just over four alcoholic drinks per week. Beer remains America's preferred drink while wine comes in a close second.

PUBLISHED:| UPDATED:
A relic hunter dubbed 'Indiana Bones' has lifted the lid on a macabre collection of 400-year-old jewel-encrusted skeletons unearthed in churches across Europe.

Art historian Paul Koudounaris hunted down and photographed dozens of gruesome skeletons in some of the world's most secretive religious establishments.

Incredibly, some of the skeletons, said to be the remains of early Christian martyrs, were even found hidden away in lock-ups and containers.

They are now the subject of a new book, which sheds light on the forgotten ornamented relics for the first time.

Thousands of skeletons were dug up from Roman catacombs in the 16th century and installed in towns around Germany, Austria and Switzerland on the orders of the Vatican.

They were sent to Catholic churches and religious houses to replace the relics destroyed in the wake of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s.

Mistaken for the remains of early Christian martyrs, the morbid relics, known as the Catacomb Saints, became shrines reminding of the spiritual treasures of the afterlife.

They were also symbols of the Catholic Church's newly found strength in previously Protestant areas.

Each one was painstakingly decorated in thousands of pounds worth of gold, silver and gems by devoted followers before being displayed in church niches.

Some took up to five years to decorate.

They were renamed as saints, although none of them qualified for the title under the strict rules of the Catholic church which require saints to have been canonised.

But by the 19th century they had become morbid reminders of an embarrassing past and many were stripped of their honours and discarded.

Mr Koudounaris' new book, Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures and Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs, is the first time the skeletons have appeared in print.

Mr Koudounaris, from Los Angeles, said: 'I was working on another book looking into charnel houses when I came across the existence of these skeletons.

'As I discovered more about them I had this feeling that it was my duty to tell their fascinating story.

After they were found in the Roman catacombs the Vatican authorities would sign certificates identifying them as martyrs then they put the bones in boxes and sent them northwards.

'The skeletons would then be dressed and decorated in jewels, gold and silver, mostly by nuns.

'They had to be handled by those who had taken a sacred vow to the church - these were believed to be martyrs and they couldn't have just anyone handling them.

'They were symbols of the faith triamphant and were made saints in the municipalities.

'One of the reasons they were so important was not for their spiritual merit, which was pretty dubious, but for their social importance.
'They were thought to be miraculous and really solidified people's bond with a town. This reaffirmed the prestige of the town itself.'

He added: 'It's impossible to put a modern-day value on the skeletons.'

Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures and Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs is published by Thames and Hudson and costs 18.95 pounds.
