MBARARA/Kampala. Mbarara Archbishop Paul Bakyenga has asked pastors to first study theology before committing themselves to God’s service.
Speaking at St John’s Catholic Church at Bishop Stuart University Mbarara during mass on Sunday, Archbishop Bakyenga said Uganda is facing a ‘crisis’ of people who call themselves pastors claiming to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ yet they lack skills to interpret the Bible, a reason they have resorted to burning it.
“In Uganda we have a problem of people who come in a day and call themselves pastors and the following day you hear that they are bishops without having any knowledge of the Bible. They need to first study theology so that they can be able to interpret the Bible,’’ said Archbishop Bakyenga.
The prelate’s comments follow Pastor Bugingo of House of Prayer Ministries in Makerere Kikoni, a Kampala suburb, who stunned Christians on April 17 when he torched Bibles on claims that they are ‘misleading’ and cannot be a dependable source of the Gospel.
Pastor Bugingo, whose feats have since been despised as “stupid”, “ignorant” and “intolerant” by fellow leaders in Christ, is however, reported to have burned King James Version (KJV) and Good News Bibles, which he collected from his 6,000 flock on Easter Sunday, because they bore the words ‘Holy Ghost’ as opposed to ‘Holy Spirit.’
Archbishop Bakyenga said Pastor Bugingo burnt the Holy Book because he does not have the understanding of the Bible language.
“I studied many languages; Hebrew, Italian, Greek and I understand the Bible language well but the pastor who burnt the bible does not understand, and that is why he burnt the bible because of the word Holy Ghost,” said Archbishop Bakyenga
“There are two words in the Bible, the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost; spirit is Greek and ghost is Hebrew- meaning the Holy Spirit of God. But he doesn’t know because he did not study theology,” he explained.
He said; “What do you talk about the religion you have not studied? Burning the Bible is ridiculous and people should stop invading the religion, that is ignorance which should stop.’’
Bishop Stuart University Chaplain Rev Emmy Mwesigye said what Pastor Bugingo did depicts his ‘little understanding of Biblical language and its interpretation.’
This condemnation has also been made by lawyers under Uganda Christian Lawyers’ Fraternity (UCLF).
Speaking to the media at their offices in Kampala on Tuesday, the president UCLF, Mr Daniel Ruhweza, explained that the Bible was written more than 1,500 years by 40 writers adding that “the many translations of the Holy Book are actually made directly from original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic source texts based on a thousand of ancient manuscripts”.
